Bold Series : The Battle For Supremacy

22 Nov

And so from the corridors of RIM was developed another line of smartphones known as the BlackBerry Bold  unveiled to the very eyes of the world. The family was launched in 2008 with the 9000 Model.   In 2009 the form factor was shrunk with the 9700 and the Tour 9630. In 2010 RIM released the 9650 and 9780 refresh with OS 6. In 2011 came the 9788 and 9790 along with the current flagship – the 9900/9930 series. The 9900/9930 and 9790 are touch screen smartphones, released in August and November 2011.

The Bold family is known for its distinctive form factor; efficient, finger-friendly QWERTY keyboard, typical BlackBerry messaging capabilities with a distinctive, more premium keyboard than the Curve series. The Bold series is usually more expensive and has more premium materials (e.g. leather, soft touch, carbon fiber, metal) unlike the curve (plastic, glossy), and has much better specs. There are two basic form factors with the Bold line, the original larger size on the 9000 and 9900 Series and the “baby bold” form factor the other models have.

Enough with the history what’s with me and history? Jeeez!. Just like the in the WWF where wrestlers wrestle each other for supremacy, respect and WWF title. So is the battle for supremacy among the bold family the only difference is that this is for real unlike the WWF which all happens to be a stage act….Time to roll out our fierce bold contestants who have been waiting with so much anticipation to get  into the ring and battle it out amongst themselves in a claim to the WWF of Bold Supremacy title. Now ladies and Gentlemen the moment you all have been waiting for,  introducing to you the very best of the bold family from my left to right.

  BlackBerry  9700                  BlackBerry 9780                     BlackBerry 9930                     BlackBerry 9790

 BB9700                    BB9780

TIE: BOLD 9700     109 x 60 x 14.1mm, 122g

TIE: BOLD 9780     109 x 60 x 14.1mm, 122g

In terms of form they are both on a tie, asking why? I JUST DON’T WHY. A bold is a bold and always will be a bold and we all know that bolds have the same chassis. You the usual style of bold. It’s rather like a steam-rolled version of a Nokia Classic or, more accurately, a BlackBerry Pearl. it’s wide, flat, no offense to any pocket no matter the size, definitely pocket friendly. Both are BlackBerry and you’ll have trouble with neither here on form factor.

TIE: BOLD 9700      2.44″, 480x360px, LCD

TIE: BOLD 9780      2.44″, 480x360px, LCD

And once again we have a TIE, YES………A TIE! well same chassis means same screen, and that screen is slightly disappointing 2.44-inch display in the modern age which, fortunately, is actually bigger than it sounds. If you’re looking to consume bags of video on your phone, you might want to think twice about unless you’re ready to get your eyes squinting and watery, well then i wish good luck but anything happens to your eyes don’t even think of holding RIM responsible. But hey! the reason you’re reading this is to know who’s the best of the all the bold series.

Engine Room

TIE: BOLD 9700      624 MHz CPU, 256MB RAM

TIE: BOLD 9780      624 MHz CPU, 256MB RA

Guess you heard it before? well you’re going to hear it again,  IT’S A TIE!. No change to the chassis and no change to the engine room either, it seems. Both phones have the same modest CPU and RAM stats for this day and age, but then they’re not required to run the same big screens and games that other modern smartphones do, so who cares? give it a try on your bold be bold enough…….hehehehe. Well this battle for supremacy seems to be a fierce one between Bold 9700 and Bold 9780 with Three categories, three ties. No one seems to be ready to go down.

WINNER: BOLD 9780      5MP + flash & video

LOSER: BOLD 9700         3.2MP + flash & video

Ladies and gentlemen! Finally! we have a winnnnnnnnner. At last, something to talk about. Yeah, we have the 1.8megapixels to debate. Does this mean that RIM has introduced an entirely different  and superior camera workings? Probably not. There’s been no mention of a better lens and we know it’s the same old LED flash and same screen-sized video capture yuck! so really that’s just it 1.8 megapixels. Make your photo a bit bigger so guess you can forget about your photographers for while.

WINNER: BOLD 9780        512MB onboard + 2GB microSD

LOSER: BOLD 9700           256MB on board + 2GB microSD

And we have another winner and I’m sure you already know who the winner is ? Two in a row. First there’s 1.8megapixels between the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and 9780, now it’s 256MB of on board memory. Granted, you can expand either handset up to 32GB via microSD cards (a 2GB unit comes in the box) but hey! a win’s a win Bold 9700, take heart….LOL! That said, there’s no storing apps on your removable unit with the Bold 9700, so actually a doubling up in the 9780 is no small thing- provided  there’s enough good apps on the platform, of course.

TIE: BOLD 9700                 Wi-Fi 802.11b/g

TIE:BOLD 9780                  Wi-Fi 802.11b/g

Naturally, there’s a lot more to the connectivity stats of both phones, but the headline really is that RIM has not taken the time to update the radio set up at all – not even to introduce n-Wi-Fi which the world and his wife seems to be doing in 2010. Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s something every phone needs but with more n-routers out there, one does wonder. Otherwise, it’s your standard Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, 3G, micro USB and all the trimmings.

Battery Life

TIE: BOLD 9700             6hrs talk, 17hrs standby

TIE: BOLD 9780             6hrs talk, 17hrs standby

So, back to the ties again. Same battery. Same battery life. I think you get the picture.

WINNER: BOLD 9780       BB OS 6.0

LOSER: BOLD 9700          BB OS 5.0

Okay, now this is a big and i mean a very big category. The Bold 9780 features BlackBerry’s fresh off the line 6.0 OS, and it’s a considerably more friendly looking creature for it. While the 5.0 OS is an efficient but slightly dry affair, the latest version is much more consumer focused and has all sorts of exciting features like universal search, a better Web kit browser and generally an all round sexier look and feel. But hey! don’t feel so bad for Bold 9700 because it can now have its OS 5.0 upgraded to OS 6.0….Yippy! But still Bold 9780 remains the winner.

Well! ladies and Gentlemen I’m sure you all might be wondering who won or arguing among yourselves who won. and If you ask me, which i know you all will do this my answer a TIE . Because there’s little or difference between Bold 9700 and Bold 9780 only had small additions to the camera, storage and revamped OS that’s nothing again. But to be fair and Honest i still think Bold 9780 won this contest. Let’s left for you to agree or disagree.

   BB9930            BB9790

WINNER: BOLD 9930           115 x 66 x 10.5mm

LOSER: BOLD 9790              110 x 60 x 11.4mm

Too early for a win? well nothing is too early when you are writing about the two latest and most wanted Bold BlackBerry. In terms of form Bold 9930 carries the day with it is wide form and sleek stainless steel edges, a true beauty to behold. But that doesn’t mean Bold 9790 isn’t a beauty too, Bold 9790 comes in a unique, sleek, slim and stylish form what I will call an extreme eye catcher. Bold 9930 won because it was bigger in size but not as sleek as Bold 9790.

WINNER: BOLD 9930            640 x 480px, LCD

LOSER: BOLD 9790               480 x 360px, LCD

Yeah! it’s another win for Bold 9930 and don’t bother asking why because it’s already obvious they both have different chassis which also means different display. The BlackBerry Bold 9790 has a relatively tiny 2.45-inch touch screen display, Bold 9930 has a wider 2.8-inch high resolution touch screen display which is good enough to watch movies and display large images but still Bold 9790 can be used for the same purpose but won’t have the same display or excitement as Bold 9930.

Engine Room

WINNER: BOLD 9930          1.2 GHz CPU, 768MB RAM

LOSER: BOLD 9790           1 GHz CPU, 768MB RAM

Winning form, display and now engine room. kind of surprised Bold 9790 had a 1 GHz unlike Bold 9930 which has a 1.2GHz processor speed making it faster than Bold 9790. Bold 9790 will run applications smoothly but not as fast as Bold 9930 which actually is the fastest.

TIE: BOLD 9930            5MP + flash & video

TIE: BOLD 9790          5MP + flash & video

And again it’s a tie wasn’t expecting anything different in the imaging aspect as they both have the same megapixels with flash and video, though  Bold 9930 still has a little advantage with it is imaging thanks to its EDOF (all-focus). EDOF stands for Extended Depth of Field and works by using an asymmetrical lens that has the capability to focus objects from different distances, depending on which parts of the lens the various light ‘rays’ strike, on the same sensor. This goes to say that you get better and higher quality images with an EDOF and not with the auto-focus. Giving Bold 9930 a slight advantage in imaging. And if you love taking pictures with high resolutions and quality then Bold 9930 leads the way.

TIE: BOLD 9930          8 GB onboard + microSD 32

TIE: BOLD 9790          8 GB onboard + microSD 32

A tie in the engine room, imaging and now the storage. I’m kind of surprised was expecting a slight change between the two but there was none. they both have 8gb internal memory and can be extended to 32gb with the microSD. This gives enough space to store apps, games and other large files in both smartphones.

TIE: BOLD 9930         Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n

TIE: BOLD 9790        Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n

Another tie it is, in the connectivity RIM made an improvement with it is Wi-Fi by including the n-Wi-Fi which is much needed in today’s world of connection. And they both have it.

Battery Life

WINNER: BOLD 9930     6hrs Talk, 13hrs Standby

LOSER: BOLD 9790        5hrs Talk, 19hrs Standby

There you have it, another win for Bold 9930. Guess in your mind you already know who the winner is going to be? Bold 9930 has longer talking hours and standby unlike Bold 9790 that has lower talking hours and standby. But they both have something in common though and it is the 1230 mAH Replaceable Lithium-ion polymer battery.

TIE: BOLD 9930         BB OS 7

TIE: BOLD 9790         BBOS 7

In the biggest and most important category  we have a tie, both are using the new and latest OS 7 which should leave smiles on the faces of the users and fans too. Impressive I must say.

Clearly Bold 9930 is the winner but still The Bold 9930 has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a top of the line BlackBerry Smartphone: a fast processor, a high resolution touch screen, BlackBerry OS7, and a decent 1230 mAH battery. Frankly, there just isn’t room in this short article to learn all about the Bold 9900.

Who is it for: Users who want the best possible BlackBerry experience

The Bold 9790 is a step down from the BlackBerry Bold 9930. It’s not as large as its 9930 cousin, the screen resolution is less (but still a touch screen), and the processor is not quite as fast. Still, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 is an impressive addition to the BlackBerry line up. As to why RIM created a similar but less-powerful Bold, there are several reasons. RIM tries hard to create a BlackBerry Smartphone for everyone. The 9790 itself is physically smaller than the 9930; not everyone likes a giant Smartphone. More importantly, the Bold 9790 is a Bold-on-a-budget. The slightly lowered specifications means this Bold should sell for substantially less than the 9930. Everybody likes a good deal.

Who is it for: Users who want a top-quality, front facing keyboard BlackBerry without breaking the bank. The Bold 9790 is actually being marketed toward women (smaller hands, smaller phone) by RIM as well.

Bonus Feature: The Bold 9790 has a 5 MP auto-focus camera. This is not the same as the much-bemoaned EDOF camera in the Bold 9930. Bonus!

After so much battles and confrontations still hard to say which of the bold is the BOSS.  So let me leave this way who do you think won the battle for supremacy in the bold series? who exactly will you consider to be the boss? But hey! if you ask me who the boss is ? i say it’s ……hmmmmmm..really i don’t know. You tell me who you think is the winner?
